While agriculture has generally developed well under NAFTA, significant improvements to the agreement will allow food and agriculture to trade more equitably and increase exports of U.S. agricultural products. The Chapter on Technical Barriers to Trade (CTA) is an important assessment of NAFTA. It includes standards, technical regulations and compliance assessment procedures (product evaluation to ensure they meet requirements) that may affect exchanges between the parties. By strengthening trade and investment rules, this agreement has proven to be a solid foundation for building Canada`s prosperity and has provided a valuable example of the benefits of trade liberalization for the rest of the world.
